Cloudscape Comics

About Cloudscape

The Cloudscape Comics Society is a community of comic creators in Vancouver, BC who together publish and distribute quality graphic novel anthologies, as well as host comic workshops and other related events. Here enterprising comic artists come together to network, develop their ideas, and help each other perfect their craft. Everyone is welcome to the weekly evening meet-ups on Wednesdays, starting at 7:30 PM in the back room of the Grind and Gallery Coffee Bar.

Cloudscape Televised 24-Hour Fundraising Comic Jam

As the ultimate expression of our fundraiser for Giants of Main Street, we’re going to have a 24-hour comic jam at the home of our esteemed founder Jeff Ellis. The jam starts at 8:00 tonight and continues until 8:00 tomorrow.

Watch the cream of Vancouver comic artists draw, create, discuss, argue, and go slowly insane over a 24-hour period at 24-Hour Comic Jam.

Experience the madness!

21 Journeys Nominated for a Gene Day Award

Cloudscape’s most recent anthology, 21 Journeys, has been nominated as a finalist for the Gene Day Award! The Gene Day Award honours Canadian comic book creators who self-publish their books. Everyone over at Cloudscape HQ is really pleased. The only thing that could make this better is to find out that Colleen MacIsaac has also been nominated for her book Fifteen Months. Colleen is a Cloudscape member formerly of the West Coast, and has a story (a pretty amazing story) in 21 Journeys as well.

So no matter who wins, the West Coast is sure showing its (comic-making) muscle! Congratulations everyone!

More Canadian heroes

Here’s some Canadian heroes by the multi-talented Colin Upton:

The Loon, scourge of the 1940s Montreal underworld and a fanatical Nazi-hunter. Canada’s most ruthless, most eccentric, and certainly most debonair crime-fighter. Here he is with his customized tank and two of his duck sidekicks.

TCAF 2012

Cloudscape will be represented at TCAF by Jeff Ellis and Jonathon Dalton at tables 122 and 123. There will also be many friends and contributors on hand like Angela Melick, Sam Logan, Jordyn Bochon and Brian Fukushima! Come say hi and buy a book.

All-Canadian Heroes

So I’m currently putting together the roster for the graphic novel anthology All-Canadian Comics, and have been sent a wide variety of heroes, all compelling and all very Canadian.

Here’s a sample of the ones we have so far:

  1. Johnny Canuck (by Bevan Thomas and Jeff Ellis): Canada’s living legend, who helped drive back the Nazis in World War II and now returns to confront modern foes.
  2. The Loon II (by Bevan Thomas and Jeff Ellis): The scourge of the Montreal underworld, a mysterious lunatic vigilante with unknown ties to the Loon of the 1940s.
  3. E. Pauline Johnson (by Shannon Campbell and Reetta Linjama): One of Canada’s first national poets, who in this universe was a prominent reporter of BC superhumans at the dawn of the 20th century.
  4. Ikniqpalagaq (by Bevan Thomas and Jeri Weaver): Half-human daughter of the North Wind, guardian of the Arctic and all its secrets.
  5. The Energy Trader (by Morgan Wolf and Cody Andreasen): Mild-mannered Torontonian transformed by an evil corporation into an energy conduit.
  6. Canada Jacques (by Bevan Thomas and Ksenia Kozhevnikova): Perhaps the first Metis gay-activist superhero.

There’s still room for more!
